Our clients enlarged their home with a split-level extension which created space for an enormous kitchen extending back into the existing house, 13m (42ft) long.
The rear area is dedicated to baking, with the ovens and food storage as central as possible, and family meals are cooked at the garden end. Built-in seating is placed on the change in levels to enjoy a framed view of the street as well as proximity to the outside.
With such a long space we wanted to avoid repetitive flat-fronted doors, so we created a version of a ledged & battened door using random width oak planks.
We reduced the visual bulk of the island as much as possible, raising the storage up, and creating a slot under the top as a space for laptops and books. This gave us the opportunity to show the leg frames, and we also added some colour!
